Fuel tanker explodes after Highway 99 crash in Selma

SELMA, Calif. (KFSN) -- Black smoke and bright flames shot into the sky over Selma Saturday morning after officers say a semi-truck carrying 8,600 gallons of fuel sideswiped a box truck in the southbound lanes of Highway 99.

"There was an Isuzu box truck that was disabled and parked on the shoulder," says CHP Sgt. Adrian Lopez. "While waiting for assistance, approximately 10 minutes later, they were impacted by the Peterbilt tanker truck."

The box truck had only minor damage, and the drivers of both vehicles escaped the crash with minor injuries.

Debris from the crash hit a third vehicle, but that driver was not hurt.

CHP officers say it's a good outcome, given the circumstances.

Firefighters with both Selma City Fire and CAL FIRE had to let all the fuel burn before they could begin clearing the area.

Highway 99 was shut down for hours before partially reopening in the afternoon.

Nearby residents watched as the tall wall of flames threatened their neighborhood.

"Keeping it from spreading to other areas, that they were able to do," Sgt. Lopez said.
